Pouf, Stool or Ottoman?

Although used identically, they technically refer to different pieces of living room furniture. The differences maybe small but knowing them can make future furniture shopping missions easier.

A stool / ottoman is defined as a low, upholstered stool. By its definition, they can be used as a footrest and sometimes for storage. They have based the style on similar items found in the ottoman empire.

A pouf (or pouffe) on the other hand is a cushioned footstool or a low seat with no back and has its origins in France. They vary in size, firmness and function as makeshift chairs, footstools or even side tables.

In function a pouf and stool/ottoman are similar. Both are variations of low stools and can serve as footrests. Using them for extra seating or as side tables are the more contemporary uses, but both can serve these purposes too (especially in small spaces that require multi-tasking furniture to maximise your space).

Some ottomans can also double as storage stools / benches in the bedroom to organise your bedlinen and blankets. Poufs generally do not have storage space.

Both differ also in appearance. Stool/ottomans are almost always firmer and less pillowy. Poufs in comparison are more like oversized pillows. Some ottomans have legs that raise them slightly, while poufs sit flat on the floor. Larger ottomans can easily work as a coffee table, but most poufs tend to be too small for this purpose. Either can be round or square. A rule of thumb you can apply is that anything that looks like a cushion is a pouf and anything more table-like a stool/ottoman.

How do you pick between a pouf and a stool?

For small spaces in need of a colour accent or a little extra seating consider a pouf. They are compact, have a boho vibe and fit well in relaxed and nonchalant spaces. For more formal rooms, look for a stool or ottoman, either as an addition to a footrest-less sofa or a coffee table.
